Brief Introduction

INCOMING PRESIDENT : CAPT.(IN) PROF.(DR.) GS INDA

Captain (IN) Prof.(Dr.) GS Inda after serving in the Indian Navy for more than 41 ½ years retired in Jul 2013. During his tenure in the Navy, he has held various appointments afloat and ashore viz. on board warships INS Deepak, Kesari, Krishna, Bhavnagar, Arnala and survey ships INS Sandhayak & Nirdeshak, as Assistant/Senior Surveyor and Navigating Officer. He was appointed Senior Instructor at National Institute of Hydrography, Goa from 1989-91. He was appointed Executive Officer INS Nirupak from 1991-93. He held the post of Deputy Hydrographer at NHO Dehradun from 1993-97 and commanded INS Jamuna from Jun 1997 to Jul 1998. He also served as Joint Director/Director of Hydrography at Naval Headquarters from 1998 to 2006. During this appointment, he has immensely contributed in Maritime Boundary, Baselines, EEZ, Continental Self delineation surveys and preparation of India’s Baselines claim for submission to UNCLCS. The ship INS Jamuna under his command carried out Post-cyclone survey of Ports Kandla and Vadinar & Gulf of Kachch in Jun 1998 and Contract survey of Mudra Port for Adani Ports Ltd. in 1998.

He was on deputation to Inland Waterways Authority of India as Hydrographic Chief from 2006-09. He also held the charge of Officer-in-charge, National Inland Navigation Institute at Patna. Later, he was Senior Fellow at Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (a Think-Tank) of Headquarters, Integrated Defence Staff/ Ministry of Defence 2009-14.

He is a Life Member, Fellow and Fellow Emeritus of the Institution. For the past 25 years, he has been actively involved in the Institution of Surveyors as Council Member, Member & Chairman Examination Board Sub-div.1(b), Member & Chairman, Application Sub Committee and Chairman Academic Council of the Institution. In addition, he held the post of Hon. Secretary, Vice President & Senior Vice President.

On sudden passing away of the Past President late Shri DL Vohra, he was installed as President (officiating) on 30 Jun 2018. Since then he has been singularly managing the administration, academic activities and operation control of Institution with support from honourable Council Members, Registrar and IoS staff.

He holds PhD in Hydrography & Inland Water Transport from Jawaharlal Nehru University (It is worth mentioning here that from his PhD research 02 National Waterways were declared by the Govt. of India in Assam). Further he has MPhil in Management from Nagaland University, MBA from BIMM, Pune and Masters in Defence Studies from Madras University. He actively participated in various international Seminars, Workshops and presented many papers on Hydrography, Dredging, Oceanography, Inland Water Transport, Maritime Affairs, EEZ, Continental Shelf and international Affairs on Iran, Oman, Egypt and War on Terror in Afghanistan.

He actively participated in Indo-Pak War 1971, Ops. Pawan in Sri Lanka 1987, Kargil War 1999 and Ops. Parakaram 2001.

He was awarded Chief of the Naval Staff Commendation on 04 Dec 1993 and “Marwad-Ratna” under the Veer Durgadas Rathore Award for excellence in Science & Technology in 2019 by the Rajasthan Govt. & erstwhile Maharaja of Jodhpur.

On 15 Jan 2024, he was elected as PRESIDENT, Bhootpurva Sainik Samudayik Sewa Samiti, Jodhpur (Rajasthan). He is actively involved in social, religious, welfare & honour of Veterans, Veer Naris and families of Shahid Parivars in his district of Jodhpur. He also contested Rajasthan Assembly election as independent candidate from his home Constituency in Nov 2013.
